Cecelia Bostwick, Alan Braswell and Bobby McLendon were among the Rotarians presenting books to local students last week. The Blakely Rotary Club distributed 220 thesauruses at Early County Middle School and Southwest Georgia Academy last week.

“Our goal was to give every eighth grader their own thesaurus,” stated Rotary president Jack Watson.

“The Thesaurus Project,” headed by service director Christie Haynes, is one of Rotary’s many local literacy projects.

In addition to the Thesaurus Project the Blakely Rotary Club has given third graders dictionaries each year for a number of years.

Utilizing funds from a Southwest Georgia Rotary District Literacy Grant to extend literacy efforts the local Rotarians also presented freshmen students at Early County High and Southwest Georgia Academy with an English Usage Guide.

President Jack Watson gave a brief presentation explaining to the students the importance of the proper usage of the English language. He also told them about some of the Rotary Club’s local projects and the worldwide efforts of Rotary International.

The students’ attention was also drawn to Rotary’s Four-Way Test pasted inside the cover of each book...
