Catherine Jenkins

Retired Secretary

Catherine Dews Jenkins, 92, of Blakely, Ga., died June 19, 2015, in the emergency room at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Ga.

Mrs. Jenkins was born June 7, 1923, in Blakely to the late Charles Edward Dews and Alexine Bates Dews.

Mrs. Jenkins moved to Albany when she was a one-year-old and then to Edison, Ga., in 1934. She graduated from Edison High School in 1940 and attended South Georgia College. From 1942 until 1946, she served as secretary to the surgeon at Turner Field Naval Air Station in Albany and later as secretary to Accident Analysis Division at Langley Field, Va., from 1946 to 1947. From 1950 to 1985, she worked as a secretary for the Blakely Peanut Company. She was a member of the Blakely United Methodist Church and Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was preceded in death by Thomas Grubbs Jenkins, her husband of 55 years, in 2005 and by her five brothers, Charles, Robert, Thomas, Kenneth and Alton Dews.

Mrs. Jenkins was a family favorite and was affectionately known to her nieces and nephews by a variety of names, including Aunt Catherine, Kate and Aunt Cap. She and Thomas traveled all over the country to visit relatives, and all of her family felt very much at home in her home.

Surviving are her two sisters-in-law, Freida Dews of Conyers, Ga., Thelma Dews of Atlanta, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews, Charles Dews of Buena Vista, Ga., Gene Dews of Headland, Ala., Bobby Dews of Edison, Patricia MacLean of Trussville, Ala., Lawrence Killingsworth of Spokane, Wash., Scott Killingsworth of Atlanta, Marcia Killingsworth of Edison, Thomas Dews Jr. of Silver Spring, Md., Jim Dews of Canton, Ga., Julie Dews of Montreat, N.C., Kenneth Dews Jr. of Winterville, N.C., Alexine Bryant of Greenville, N.C., Madge Gay Thompson of Winterville, N.C., Catherine Nelson of Winterville, Alton Dews Jr. of Mechanicsville, Va., David Dews of Atlanta, Kirk Dews of Richmond, Va., and Catherine Dorrien of Dunwoody, Ga. Additionally, she leaves behind numerous greatnieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, June 22, 2015, at Blakely First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dwight Bishop officiating. A private burial followed in the Blakely Cemetery.

The family received friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the social hall of Blakely First United Methodist Church.
