City Council meeting

The Blakely City Council adopted two ordinances at their September meeting and tabled another.

Having determined that it is in the best interest of the City of Blakely to create the position of Municipal Court Clerk, the council held the second reading and adopted an ordinance creating Chapter 6 of the Official Code of Ordinances establishing the position, procedures and duties.

City attorney Tommy Coleman noted the city at one time had a Municipal Court Clerk, but at some point it had been deleted from the ordinances.

The council also held a second reading and adopted an ordinance providing for a Planning Commission. The ordinance was tabled at the August meeting to allow the council time to consider a request from the commission to increase members’ compensation from $50 per month to $100 per month. The ordinance was approved providing the $50 per month compensation.

A proposed ordinance authorizing a Bed & Breakfast as a conditional use in areas zoned R-1 was tabled because it must be advertised and considered by the Planning Commission.

The Planning Commission’s recommendation to approve a Bed & Breakfast at 14807 River Street was also tabled.

Tabled at the August meeting for further review, a $13,750 service agreement for engineering services at the Gateway project was approved.

Craig Hughes reported to the council that Oxford Construction was the sole bidder for resurfacing 1.3 miles of Church Street from Chattahoochee Ave. to MLK. The $210,000 bid included milling and paving. The city is awaiting a paving only bid before going forward with the project.

Hughes noted Oxford was the sole bidder due to their asphalt plant on the bypass in Blakely.
